Berks Wins Opening Game of Three-Game Series with Abington - Penn State Berks Athletics (2024)

READING, PA- The Penn St. Berks Baseball team battled Penn St. Abington in a three-game series, splitting the first two games on Saturday, before falling in game three on Sunday. The Lions took game one 6-4 before narrowly falling in game two by a score of 15-14. Berks built an early lead in game three, but could not hold off a rally by Abington, falling by a score of 18-12.

GAME 1
Abington raced out to an early lead in the first game of the series, scoring two runs in the first inning. Berks responded in the top of the second inning. Nick Bergeman led off the inning with a single through the left side. Isaiah Dull was then hit by a pitch and Colin Amerine walked to load the bases. Jonathan Myers drew another walk, bringing home the Lions first run of the game. Later in the inning Nick Hardesty hit a hard ground ball that allowed a run to score. Berks would again load the bases for David Rudisill, who drew a walk to plate a third run, giving the Lions a 3-2 lead.

On the mound for the Lions was Josh Miiller who threw 7.0 innings allowing four runs on six hits while fanning 10 Abington batters. With the game tied 3-3 in the top of the fourth inning, Berks would get on the board again. Colin Templin reached base with a single to third base. Zach Smith then lifted a ball deep into left field, recording a triple and allowing Templin to score easily giving Berks the 4-3 lead. Abington answered back in the fifth inning, scoring one run to tie the game at four.

The game was scheduled for seven innings, but with the score tied at four after seven innings, the teams went to an eighth inning. Berks grabbed control of the game in the top of the eighth inning. Dull was hit by a pitch and a double from Amerine put runners on second and third from Myers. Myers delivered a clutch hit, hammering a double into the right center field gap, scoring both runners and giving Berks a 6-4 lead. Justin Hefner came in relief to pitch the eighth inning, striking out two of the three batters he faced to secure the 6-4 victory.

GAME 2
Berks raced out of the gate in game two of the doubleheader, building a large early advantage. Kolbie Reeser led off the game with a single to center field and advanced to second base on a bunt by Hardesty. Templin followed with a single to left field, and due to a throwing error Resser was able to score the game's first run. Later in the inning with the bases loaded Begeman reached on fielder's choice, allowing Templin to score. The Lions tacked on another run in the second inning. Myers led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Hardesty brought Myers home, slicing a single into right field.

The Lions offense exploded in the third inning. Dull sparked the offense, hammering a two-run homerun over the left field fence, making the score 5-0. After a single by Amerine, Myers rocketed a homerun over the right field fence, pushing the lead to seven. Later in the inning, Templin added an eighth run, hitting an RBI double that brought home Reeser. Abington battled back, scoring once in the third inning and twice in the fourth inning to cut the deficit down to five.

Berks continued to score, bringing home two runs in the fifth inning. Hardesty and Griffin Kay each drove in an RBI to make the score 10-3. The Lions plated two more runs in the sixth inning, with Resser belting a single to left field with the bases loaded. Abington came roaring back in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring nine runs to take a 13-12 lead.

The Lions settled down and recaptured the lead in the top of the eighth inning. Amerine started the rally with a double to left center field. Moments later, Myers tripled to left field driving in Amerine and tying the game at 13. Reeser laid down an excellent sacrifice bunt, allowing Myers to score and Berks to recapture the lead. Abington would not go away, hitting a two-run homerun with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to pull off the comeback victory.

GAME 3
Berks once again jumped out early in the third game, scoring seven runs in the top of the first inning. Hardesty started the offense with a single to right field. Templin drew a walk to put a pair of runners on base. Rudisill scored Hardesty with an RBI single to right field. Smith kept the rally going with an RBI single to left field. Later in the inning, Amerine blasted a single through the left side, bringing home a pair of runners, making the score 4-0. With two outs in the inning, Berks worked the bases loaded for Resser, who crushed a double into right center field, clearing the bases and giving the Lions a 7-0 lead. Abington answered back with two runs in the bottom of the first inning to make the score 7-2.

Templin led off the second inning with a double to center field. Rudisill smashed a single into right field, bringing in Templin to extend the advantage. Later in the inning, Dull scored Rudisill with an RBI double to left field.

Abington stormed back, scoring nine runs in the bottom of the second inning and two more runs in the third inning to take a 13-9 lead. Berks tried to battle back scoring one run in the fourth inning when Dull singled up the middle to score Smith. Abington scored four runs in the sixth inning and one run in the eighth inning to pull away from Berks. The Lions plated a run in the seventh and eighth innings, but they could not close the gap, falling by a score of 18-12.
